Karl M. Schmitt

Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1922, Karl Michael Schmitt enrolled at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC in 1940 majoring in American history, served in the US Army (1943-45) and received his BA (1947) and MA (1949) from Catholic University. He received his PhD in history from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954. Schmitt’s first job was to teach in upstate New York at Niagara University; he then worked as an intelligence officer at the State Department.

Schmitt joined the Department of Government at the University of Texas at Austin in 1958, where he spent the majority of his career as a Latin Americanist until his retirement in 1988 when he was made Professor Emeritus. He became associate director of the Institute of Latin American Studies (ILAS, now LLILAS) in 1968.
