Kluge would return to the Pacific islands again and again. In 1975, he was asked to become director of the Constitutional Convention that created the Federated States of Micronesia. Among his contributions was the Constitution’s Preamble. His book, The Edge of Paradise: America in Micronesia best captured his long-term commitment to, and love of, the islands.
Kluge is the author of fourteen books, including Eddie and the Cruisers, which was made into two motion pictures. He is also the author of the original Life Magazine story that became the motion picture Dog Day Afternoon, starring Al Pacino. In 2026, Dog Day Afternoon opened on Broadway in New York.
Kluge’s other nonfiction book, Alma Mater: A College Homecoming, chronicles his time as a student and teacher at Kenyon College, where he began teaching creative writing in 1992 and was Writer-in-Residence from 1995 until his retirement in 2020. Kluge has also written more than sixty articles for publications including The Wall Street Journal, where he was a reporter, Life Magazine, where he was an assistant editor, Playboy, Rolling Stone, Smithsonian and National Geographic Traveler, where he was a contributing editor for 15 years, writing articles on scores of destinations including Jerusalem, Tasmania, Singapore, Antarctica, Vienna and Bali.
